In March 2006, a little movie by Zack Snyder called 300 was released. It was a black and white film based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller (Sin City). There were bloody battle scenes for the men and hot, sweaty males for the women (Hello Gerard Butler!). 300 became a hit and had a $70 million dollar opening. That number set a precedent for March. It showed that it wasn’t just the summer months that can produce blockbuster numbers.
Since then there has been Alice in Wonderland ($334 million haul), Watchmen (another Zack Snyder hit at $107 million), and Hunger Games last year with $405 million.*
Since March has consistently brought in big numbers since 2006, it looks like this March won’t be an exception. There are three to choose from (if I have my way I will be seeing all three). First up on March 1st is Jack the Giant Slayer, directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men). Nicholas Hoult as Jack and Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, and Ian McShane round out the cast. Next is Oz the Great and Powerful on March 8th. It is from the producers of Alice in Wonderland. The trailers are bright, big, and colorful. James Franco plays the title role and is supported by Michele Williams, Mila Kunis, and Rachel Weisz as the good and wicked witches of Oz. The last film is my trailer from Monday, The Host. The Host will be released on March 29th.
I am looking forward to all three movies. It will warm me up for summer. Here’s to hoping they are all good.
